  • Organics Recycling

Welcome to your new Organics Recycling Program!

CR&R Environmental Services, together with the City of Newport Beach, will be launching the new Organics Recycling Program on January 15, 2022. This new program will co-collect food scraps and yard waste in your green lid organics cart. The organic material collected will be taken to one of CR&R’s approved composting facilities to be converted into compost.

    Organics Recycling FAQs

    1) What is organic waste?

      • Organic waste consists of food waste and yard waste. Meat, dairy, fish, grains, fruit, vegetables, coffee grounds, eggshells, fats, oils, grease, food-soiled paper, flowers, grass, leaves, prunings, and weeds can be placed in your green lid organics cart.
      • Do NOT put pet waste, palm fronds, landfill materials, recyclables, and hazardous waste in your organics cart.

    2) Why am I separating my organic waste?

      • When organics are collected with your trash and sent to the landfill, they breakdown anaerobically resulting in the production of methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas 25x more potent than carbon dioxide. By separating your organic waste can reduce the amount of methane that is emitted into the atmosphere.

    3) How do you properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease (FOG)?

      • Allow for your fats, oils, and grease to cool down and solidify. Once they are cooled, scrape the contents into a compostable bag, paper bag, or container to store in your freezer or fridge. If using a compostable bag or paper bag, you may dispose of both bags with its contents into your green lid organics cart. If you are using a recyclable container, dispose of the fats, oils, and grease into your green lid organics cart and either reuse the container or thoroughly clean the container before disposing of it in your blue lid recycle cart.

    4) What is food-soiled paper?

      • Food soiled paper are paper products that have been in contact with liquid or solid food waste therefore cannot be recycled into other paper products. Some examples include napkins, paper plates and cups, stained pizza boxes, and used coffee filters.

    5) How often is my green lid organics cart going to be picked up?

      • Weekly on your regular collection day.

    6) If I don’t have much organic material, can I put my kitchen food scrap container out for collection?

      • No, all organic material must only be placed into your green lid organics cart.

    7) How does CR&R’s organics program differ from at-home composting?

      • At home composting can quickly break down fruits and vegetables, but it does not have the same capabilities for meat and dairy products. CR&R’s composting facilities have the advanced technology and resources to process all organic materials at a much faster and more efficient rate.

    8) Why do I need a green lid organics cart when I throw my food waste directly into the garbage disposal?

      • When fats, oils, grease, and food are disposed of through your home plumbing system, you risk creating obstructions in your drainage systems. The food that does make it through your pipes is diverted to a local wastewater treatment plant. The food waste is then separated out and transferred to the landfill where it decomposes and produces greenhouse gases, such as methane. It is important to make efforts to divert food waste from going to landfills to reduce emissions that contribute to global warming and climate change.
